[july 29, 2003] tiger's weekly
back

I hate computer errors.  I was well into writing this
weeks issue when I bumped the sleep button on the
computer and then the brilliant machine pulled an "old
father time" on me and refused to wake up.  I'm so
flustered I don't even know if that reference makes
any sense.  It sounds good.  I'll run with it.  Now,
what had I written?  I will try and recall.

It was tough to get started this evening.  I needed a
dose of "Eye of the Tiger" to get this issue off the
ground.  I knew that I would be burning some midnight
oil, as the boys were out west playing the Mariners
tonight.  The Tigs did manage to notch a couple of
wins this week.  That's two wins closer to catching
the '63 Mets.  Right now, 41 wins looks pretty good
and rather attainable.  Mike Maroth is now five losses
away from a not so magic number.  He lost again this
week and now has fifteen L's on the season (no you can
not use your calculator to figure out what the magic
number is).  Whoops, for a second I forgot that I'm on
my break from teaching.

New Subscribers:  Thanks to Amy Karnitz and Brandon

Week of 7/23 - 7/29

Record:  2-4  LWLWL-L

Undy-Five-Hundy:  For those of you who aren't familiar
(or haven't figured it out yet), the Undy-Five-Hundy
index tells us how many games the Tigers are under a
.500 winning percentage.  In years past, the Tigers
threatened to eliminate the need for the index.
Romans needed only I V and X to write the tally.  It
looks like they'll need to dust off the L this year,
as the index makes its way into the ionosphere.  If
they ever use the C I will give up baseball forever,
or become a Yankees fan.  The 2-4 record helps the
winning percentage, but bumps the index to 48.

Dunn vs. the Tigers...

Adam Dunn  26 HR's

Up Next for the Tigers...
July 30-31  @Seattle
Aug. 1-3    @Minnesota
Aug. 4      no game... Toolie's Birthday (observed)

News and Notes:  The Tigers brought up two relievers
from Toledo.  Eric Eckenstahler and Shane Loux both
made the trip out to Seattle.  Taking their places in
the not so nice, but happier clubhouse are Fernando
Rodney and Steve Avery.  Also, Bobby Higginson came
off the DL and A.J. Hinch took his spot there.

Tiger of the Week...
-------------------------------------------------------
Saturday in Traverse City, I played the most hardcore
round of golf of my life.  Thank goodness it was a
scramble or I may not have survived!  Afterwards I was
beat, and luckily my family was all for lounging in
the hotel.  While recovering, we watched Jeremy
Bonderman pitch a terrific game against Kansas City,
losing his shutout bid in the ninth.  Good stuff from
the kid (he's younger than me so I can call him that)
and let's hope there's a lot more where that came
from.
-------------------------------------------------------
LIMA TIME...
-------------------------------------------------------
Jose Lima stuck it to the Tigers again on Sunday,
pitching five scorless innings before getting pulled
for precautionary reasons.  Apparently, Lima is all
upset with the Tigers because he thinks they tried to
black ball him, or something, but is putting his
aggression towards Dombrowski behind him.  Whatever.
I'm definitely rooting for the Royals to win the
division and the AL this year.  The Tigers have
certainly done their part, going 5-8 versus the Sox
and just 2-10 versus KC.  The Tigers still have
something like 13 games left with the Twins, so at 6.5
back, you can't count them out.  But back to Lima, I
hope that he doesn't lose a game this year and shuts
down all comers in the playoffs.  LIMA TIME!

Poll Question...
-------------------------------------------------------
There's nothing too interesting in the baseball world
this week (aside from the trade deadline, of course)
so I'll switch gears to football.  Matt Millen was
fined a cool $200,000 for failing to interview a
minority candidate for the Lions head coaching job.
Opinions...I want them.

maroth's the one on the block, huh? i think both he
and/or cornejo are bait right now. god knows we need
some more bats in the lineup. ya gotta think
bonderman's untouchable, and i don't know if roney or
ledezma can be moved(i'm cloudy on rule 5). Fact is,
they're all a helluva lot better pitchers than dave
"mr. sinus" mlicki.

i wonder- if ilitch moves one of these guys to st.
louis, can we get doug weight and pavol demitra in
return?

hey, it's too damn cold this summer! i just can't
shake the red wings fever, i guess.

-andy

p.s.- got seats in the tiger's den on 7/26. it's the
30th anniversary of my first tiger's game!  well, at
least if sister amy falls asleep THIS time, i won't
miss eddie brinkman hittin' a 2 run shot to right in
the bottom of the ninth to beat the bo-sox 2-1! i love
you, amy, but i've got a reallllllllllly long memory!

Derek "The Clone" Muller

I would only be satisfied if we got Vladmir Guerrero
and two minor league prospects from the San Juan Expos
in exchange for Maroth.  The Seawolves' Major League
Affiliate could use somebody batting over .250, along
with a guy who steals bases but does not lead the
legaue in CS's
(coughcoughalexsanchezwith12coughcough).

War 1935.
War Hammerin' Hank's 58 taters.
War Rickey Henderson at age 44.
War Jose Canseco.
War Jack Morris's walrus mustache.

Rack me.  I'm out.

Mike "MAC-Daddy" Kopec (forgive me if that's Kevin)

I think it would be a really bad idea to trade either
Maroth or Bonderman.  The only exception I can think
of would be a "blockbuster" offer from another team,
but I can't think of an example and that is highly
unlikely anyway.  Both pitchers have 14 losses, but
both of them have respectable ERAs and many of their
losses have been due to lack of run support.  Hard as
this year has been to be a Tiger fan, I believe that
they are actually going about it the right way.  If
you are going to rebuild, go all-out and that is what
they are doing.

All of that said, if they could get rid of Higginson
even at below market value to a contender, I would do
it in a heartbeat.  I don't see that happening,
though.

Anthony "Whoop-A" Williams

I have to say, Matt, having been an early subscriber
myself (and one of those who wasn't so into baseball),
it's quite impressive, the number of people on your
list.  And I apologize for not getting the refrigerate

joke: I am afraid it did in fact go over my head.
Such is the lot of a non-baseball fan.  So the Tigers
have now lost more than twice as many as they have
won...  I see they did catch Adam Dunn, however.  Nice
to have something to cheer about!

Dallas "it's not Monopoly money anymore" Senters

hey matt

i have to say that i can't decide how i feel
about the trade season.  i like to see the teams
that are making commitments to going after
wins THIS SEASON.  i also sort of enjoy seeing
teams throw in the towel.  however, i don't really
recall being happy about any midseason moves
that my teams have made.  my version of fan loyalty...
once i establish my team's guys in my head as my guys,
i hate to see them go, nor am i especially content,
at least at first, with their replacements.  that
said,
the tigers have been even worse than the ohio
team at getting and keeping guys that will help
them compete, and give the fans some pride.
at least now the redwings are losing a bunch of
names, so there won't be such a disparity in star
power between detroit's american and detroit's
canadian sports teams.  keep maroth.  let him start
every fifth day.  bonderman too.  if they lose 20, 25,
30 games they will make great pitchers elsewhere
(in keeping with tiger tradition)

i apologize for not writing in last week to applaud
you
on your cryogenic commentary.  i laughed when i
read that.

Nick "Money Plays" Ciofani

It really doesn't matter to me if the Tigers trade
Mike Maroth, but I take offense to you bashing the
Best Damned Sports Show.  I find it a great show and
very entertaining, which is more than you can say
about 70% of the Tiger games.  Anyway, I would like to
officially pronounce the MLB season OVER as football
training camps have now opened.  With the Tigers and
the Tribe out of it, O'Toole needs to start paying
more attention to the Browns and the Steelers.  Next
week I am planning to check out some of Browns trining
camp so I can see a little Holcomb v. Couch.  Which
intrests me more than Brain Anderson v. Mike Maroth.
Anyway, I think we should all wish O'Toole good luck
as he travels to Vegas in less than three weeks!!!!
Single zero roulette 4 life.

Len "The Cat" Piasecki

Hi Matt
FYI on the girl that played on your brothers Little
League team. I must say that was my own daughter Stacy
Piasecki. I have fond memories of those days. Stacy
played in the RP league until age 13 then went on the
make All State in Class A Girl basketball at Mona
Shores. Her college days were spent on the hard courts
at Grand Valley State University. She was their
starting point guard and help lead the Lakers to 2
straight Regional appearances in Division II
basketball.

Stacy now lives in Grand Rapids, Mi. She is employed
by the State of Michigan and work in Family Services.

The ChannelCats 18 year old team is in Kentucky this
week playing in the USSSA World Series. Their first
game is July 29th verse a team form Connecticut. Go
Cats Go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Toolie's Trashtalk...

Again there was computer error.  The Trashtalk this
week was short, and now it's about to get shorter.
Here's the quick version of what's on my mind...

Lots of new guys going to be coming up for the Tigers.
Many others going to Toledo.  Maroth and BOnderman
probably won't be left out there for twenty losses,
but if they are, so be it.

Sanchez is good, but yes, he gets caught too much.  If
he clears that up he will be a stud.  What's up with
the Reds?  They went from contender to fifth in their
division (they haven't sunk to the Brewers level yet).
Ciofani is right, even the Lions have more appeal
than the Tigers as of now, and Steelers/Browns does
sound fun.  I'll definitely be placing a "futures" bet
in Vegas, perhaps on the Falcons.  We'll see what the
odds are like.

I'm a little frustrated with the Dean Palmer home
runs.  Seattle feasted on three run shots while the
Tigs settled for the solo variety.  Not a very easy
way to win ball games.  Also, another three errors on
Tuesday night adds to the total of the worst defensive
teams in baseball.  Bad teams usually can boast
something minute like "great defense" or "solid
baserunning" or a "terrific setup man" (i.e. Doug
Brocail or Danny Patterson).  The Tigers don't really
have anything past some ok starting pitching.  But
they've got a future if they keep doing like they're
doing.

Well I'm hitting the sack.  I had an internet failure
here just as I was trying to save the Weekly.  This
issue goes down (as far as my performance) as owrst of
the year.  But everyone has their off days.  Readers
picked me up this time.  I will do better next week.

The clock downstairs was striking four...

I'm Out

Toolie

P.S. The spelling error on worst was intentional for
comedic effect.  It may be 3:40, but I'm still trying.
