Coming off the All-Star
Break, the Tigers scored 10
runs for the first time this season in a 10-9 win at
Old New Comiskey (U.S. Cellular Field). They were hot
going into the break and it looked like a sign of good
things to come. After that win the Tigers went flat
and are on one of their familiar losing streaks. The
All-Star break has come and gone and August is fast
approaching. Once the trade deadline passes, there
won't be much excitement until the end of August, when
we'll see a lot of call ups. Actually, with Maroth
and Bonderman each reaching 14 losses this week, we
may be seeing new faces a little sooner than usual.
Speaking of new faces...

Week of 7/16 - 7/22
Record: 1-5 -WLLLLL
As Dave put it in the movie Summer School, "make that
four for gore". And as one of the '85 Bears put it:
"Buddy's guys cover it down to the bone, that's why
they call it the 46 zone." Yep, the Undy Five Hundy
Index rises up to 46 games as the Tigers boast an
impressive 26-72 record. Even the 1998 MCC Crusaders
finished 14-22, so I know there's hope for this team.
Dunn vs. the Tigers...

Up Next for the Tigers...

July 25-27 Kansas City
July 28 no game scheduled
July 29-31 @ Seattle
News and Notes: After the All Star Break, the Tigers
sent Cody Ross back to the minors to make room
for...Danny Patterson! I love this guy. You may know
him as "the other guy we got with Juan (cough cough
SOB cough) Gonzalez." In the past, Patterson has
been fairly solid out of the bullpen. His best days
came when he was playing setup man for Todd Jones and
Matt Anderson in 2000 and 2001. So far he's got a
clean slate in I think two and a third innings. If he
can start inheriting leads instead of deficits and
base runners, then maybe the club will be back in
business.

Tiger of the Week...
------------------------------------------------------
There's no denying that the biggest offensive threat
on the team is Dmitri Young. Sure, Warren Morris has
a higher batting average (well up until this week),
but who would you rather have up in the clutch (say,
up with the winning run on 3rd and one out)? Since
the break, Dmitri is 9 for 23 with three home runs and
six RBIs (I will always hold that RBI is itself a noun
and thus you may refer to many of them as RBIs).
Pitching has fallen on hard times and it's about time
the hitting picked up. Nothing better than leading by
example.

Poll Question...
------------------------------------------------------
Apparently, some clubs have been showing interest in
Mike Maroth. With the trade deadline looming, do you
think that the Tigers should deal Maroth or hold on to
him?

Keep the Tigers Newsletter coming my way. You put out
some interesting viewpoints. Someday I'll have to take
in a ball game with you and your Dad. That is if I
came get him to leave Muskegon County. Ha Ha.
If you have time check out the ChannelCats web site
www.channelcats.com it's what's happening with
baseball on the Lakeshore. Well I'm off to see the
Cats play in GR. Connie Mack tournaments begin today.

I'm an ump. I think I should get paid more.
Dang straight man. Being the ump ain't easy. You're

"Coach" Mike McKeown
Hey Matt!
Just wanted to send a thanks out to ya for bringing
the "Weakly Tigers" to me! ;-) It's a great read,
though I must admit some of the insider jargon
gettin' tossed around makes my head hurt occasionally!
Your summary is about the only thing I can look
forward to when discussing the poor Tig's.
Seems one year we hang our hat on "decent hitting",
the next on "solid defense" and this year's fav,
"good, young pitching". Wonder if I'll
live long enough to actually see all three happen in
the same year...
Anywho, keep up the good work and GO TIGERS!
Regards,
Mike McKeown
p.s.
I managed to get suite (yup, not "sweet", though they
are!) tickets for Friday and Sunday's games against
the BoSox. That's the ONLY way to watch a game.
'Course the suites are like a gazillion dollars per
game (company sponsored, hehehe), but it was fun!

John "Smoltz" Klokiz
Hey Matt,
These updates are great and kinda depressing all at
once. The Tigers are my team, but living here, I can
think they are in the race and remain blissfully
ignorant. Keep em coming, I try to get to all of the
reading, nut have been busy as all get out with the
business of mine on the expansion.
Take care,
John Klozik

Andy "All-Star" Karnitz
so's i caught some of the all-star game on the
radio(some people like to go out dancin'/ some peoples
gotta go to work-just watch me now!). seemed like a
good game- caught the bottom of the 8th/top of the
9th, most importantly! hat's off to gerritt anderson-
one helluva break for him.
chimed in once about ws homefield advantage- it's ok
by me. question, though: what happens if the game
isn't finished? coin flip? reversion back to the old
method? best record?
after last year's debacle, ya wouldn't think it could
happen again. anyone notice, though, that baker left
himself w/ only smoltz left in the pen? i'm awfully
glad the nationals didn't tie it up in the final
frame.
last item- already gave the nod to anderson, but
pujols and giambi seemed to wear themselves out in the
earlier rounds of the hr derby. whether it's a home
run derby or a kentucky derby, pacing is eveything.
secretariat and anderson seemed to know this, but
jason, albert and sham were a bit lacking in their
track sense.

Toolie's Trashtalk...
Howdy all. This week saw a couple of happy things
happen for me. First, I finished off teaching my
summer course, so now I have plenty of free time to
watch the Tigers...and actually have a life. Finals,
though they may be twenty-two questions strong, aren't
so bad to grade when you've only got nine of them.
Also, I went through my first wedding experience (no,
I'm not married) as a groomsman for Rick "Phone Book"
Grillo. Three days straight of wedding activities
were a blast, but it was about all I could handle.
Now, to address the gallery. Mike, I know that the
insider stuff can get a little tedious for those that
are outside that loop. But I feel that the random
insertions are key to the newsletter, and have been a
part of it all since its inception. I think when I
started, I had a small list of folks that I was
sending the Weekly to, and everyone on the list I knew
personally. Some of these people were not big
baseball fans, so I think to keep their interests I
would include some random jabs at those on the list
(hence the Trashtalk). So those of you that aren't
close to me personally or don't know me at all, please
bear with me and the personal quips. They aren't
meant to be understood by all. Also, sometimes a
person will respond to me and I won't be sure if it's
intended to show up in the next Weekly. If you
absolutely do not want it in the next issue, let me
know. Otherwise, if it's not obvious one way or the
other, it may go in. A couple of years back I got in
hot water with a certain Red Sox fan for including
something in the Weekly that was not intended for it.
Mr. Piasecki, it's nice to hear from you. I can
remember watching my brother play little league and
there being this girl in the league who could take any
pitcher in the league to school. Maybe you can help
me remember who that was? I'm just glad I was many
years younger!
Berol, nice to see you writing in and thanks for the
praises, but I want to hear something original like
"Cardinals rule" or "Sammy sucks" or "I love organic
chemistry." Also, this should make you and other
Cards fans grin. I was looking through the pictures
of little Toolie this weekend with Lia and I ran
across a lot of me wearing an old Cubs hat, but also a
picture of me wearing a St. Louis Cardinals 1982 World
Champions T-Shirt. Man if only I still had that. Eh,
it probably wouldn't fit anyway.
I had a revelation this week. For a long time now, I
had been smarting about the fact that there are
sixteen teams in the National League and only fourteen
in the American League. I thought that this seemed
very unfair to the NL teams, as they would have a
harder time competing. I finally realized that if
they split it up evenly at fifteen apiece then every
time a series would roll around, there would be one
team in each league not playing. So if things are to
be equal, baseball will either have to add two teams
or give two teams the boot. The way things have been
going, if they make it equal they will probably do it
with contraction (good).
So the last two nights the Tigers have been on FSD,
but when I turned on my version of the channel, I got
some variety show on Monday and The Worst Damned
Sports Show Period on Tuesday. It seems that I'm not
actaully getting Fox Sports Detroit, but some sort of
Fox Sports Generic. What the hell is that? You may
as well just give me the Fishing Channel, because
without the regional coverage, Fox Sports is just
about as entertaining. No, I will not watch John
Kruk, John Salley, any person that ever married
Roseanne Barr, and stupid celebrity guests that know
nothing about sports, talk and pretend to be funny.
Both Around the Horn and Pardon the Interruption are
more entertaining and instead of the painful 2 hours
that Worst Damned Sports show consumes (nightly),
these shows get me in and out in thirty minutes.
Personally, I think the Tigers should keep Maroth.
What are you going to trade a prospect that's shown
he's good (like Maroth) for...another prospect that is
unproven? The Jeff Weaver deal turned out to be a
great one for Dombrowski and company, so they seem to
know what they're doing. If it were me, I'd stand pat
on Maroth. I don't think Mike is going anywhere,
unless we can dump Dean Palmer on the other team.
My "Refridgerate After Winning" joke last week got
absolutely no repsonse, which was a crushing blow to
my comedic spirits. Did it just go over everyone's
head or did you find it offensive? Man, after that
one I had given myself a big Barry Horowitz pat on the
back and was just waiting for the feedback it might
generate to roll in. Instead I found myself tapping
the microphone asking "Is this thing on?" Check it
out one more time and humor me (please?).
That's all for this week. Sorry if the issue is a
little light. Although, I usually get a dose of "Stop
cluttering my mailbox, O'Toole." from Brady every
week. I didn't get to see any of the games this week,
due to being busy and having the worst cable provider
ever. Next week will most likely have more news and
more wins!
I'm Ken Griffey Jr.
I'm out (for the season AGAIN!!!!)
Toolie
