[june 3,  2003] tiger's weekly
back

Say hey, Tiger fans.  It was a wild weekend at
Comerica Park with the Yankees in town.  Sunday saw
the first time this year that CoPa resembled a
thriving park as they sold out the stadium in
anticipation of Roger Clemens winning his 300th game
vs. the kitties.  The Tigers managed to spoil the bid,
but dropped the game in 17 innings.  It also was the
first time I've ever been denied when attempting to
get into a Tigers game.  Ahhh, and the Tigers just
nailed down a win vs. the Padres.  Heck, they can't
lose against this team...5-1 all time!!!
-------------------------------------------------------
Week of 5/28 - 6/3

Record:  2-3  L-LWL-W

Undy five hundy jumps to 25 as the boys go back to a
losing record for the week.  It's not too discouraging
though (besides the fact that we're 2-4 vs. Cleveland)
as they put forth a good effort offensively when the
stadium was packed and the country was watching.  So
they showed that they can perform when the heat is on
(ok, they can perform if the opposition makes three
errors in one inning, but that's why you put the bat
on the ball).

Tigers of the Week...
-------------------------------------------------------
Dmitri Young is 10 for 25 in his last six games, a
.400 average.  He has three home runs and six RBI's
and hit the game winning three run shot in the 9th
against the Padres.  Dmitri is red hot.

Alex Sanchez, the newest Tiger, has already stolen
four bases for the new team.  He's only hitting 5 for
24, but if he can start getting on base more, that
speed could be a great boost to an offense that needs
more than Dmitri producing.

Quote of the Week...
-------------------------------------------------------
"Talk about meltdown...Kim was bubbling lava in the
World Series two years ago against the Yankees."  -
Linda Cohn on Sportscenter, Thursday night.

Cohn was referring to the trade that sent Shea
Hillenbrand to Arizona and Byung Hyun Kim to the Red
Sox.  Seriously, if the Red Sox's goal is to finish
ahead of the Yankees, and perhaps beat them head to
head, then what's up with this move?  I'm surprised
that Kim doesn't still have a stiff neck from watching
home runs by Jeter, Martinez, and Brosius go flying
into the New York night.  I'm sure he starts crying
every time "New York, New York" comes on, because it
normally plays about 20 seconds after his final pitch
of the game.  Well I'm pulling for the Sox, at least
in the AL East race.  I hope Kim can exorcise his
demons.

Some folks (Claus) are especially anti Linda Cohn, but
I don't mind her.  In fact, she's pretty funny
sometimes.  I guess it's a matter of taste.
-------------------------------------------------------
Poll Question...
-------------------------------------------------------
Sammy Sosa was ejected in the first inning of the
Rays/Cubs game tonight for using a corked bat.  Sosa
claims that the bat is his, but that he normally only
uses it for exhibitions and batting practice.  He says
that he just grabbed the wrong bat.

Do you believe Sosa?  What do you think this will do
to his reputation as one of the best home run hitters
of all time?

Gilbert cancels his date(s) to see a ball game....

This game turned out to be a dandy with the good ole
Tigers pulling it out in the end.  Despite the lack of
batting practice due to those dark looming clouds and
leaving 12 men stranded and 7 in scoring position, the
Tigers still managed to keep the Yankees at bay and
pull out the much needed W.  The player of the game
goes to Dmitri Young for going 3-4 with a HR and 2
RBIs.  His power tied the game up and the Tigers never
looked back after that.  Since there was an unusal 17
mph wind blowing straight out to dead-center, the
balls were traveling quite far and led to a total of 6
OF flys for the Yankees and 8 for the Tigers.  Munson
also provided a nice spark by going 3-4 and a run
scored.  An unusual occurance also happened during the
game when no double plays were turned.  As usual, its
not a Tiger's game unless there is some  type of
excitement at the end.  Franklin German managed to
face 4 batters and have two of the on 2nd and 3rd
without even touching a bat.  He had 2 walks, 2 Ks,
and 2 WPs in the inning.  Luckily he managed to ignore
the constant raining of boos to get Rivera to fly out
to Sanchez to end the game.

Stat of the day:  After noticing the big scoreboard
posting Walbeck's BA, I decided to follow his BA for
the rest of the game.  He started out an astounding
.049, after the first at-bat .071, 2nd .070, 3rd .068,
and 4th .089.  That has to be the highest BA I have
ever seen.  NOTTTTTTTTTTT

Not only did the Tigers get a win against the Yankees,
but they managed to 3 hit them.  Does this happen
ever?  Nope, only when Gilbo goes to the game.  I am
3-1 lifetime against the Yankees and 5-3 overall.  Now
if only some of that winning percentage can rub off on

them they could be alright.  On a side note a young
fan was escorted out of the park by security after he
tried to retrieve a HR ball that landed in the ivy in
center field.  I could only laugh as the rest of the
crowd booed for 2 minutes.  It was quite comical as
the fans were actaully not booing at the field for
once.

Quote of the week:

After Sidney Ponson threw a a wild pitch (vs. Anaheim)
with the bases loaded and his teamn up 6-0, ESPN put
in a clip in the lower right corner of the screen with
President Busch saying where's the frickin rally
monkey at?

Here's a question I would like discussed in the next
weekly since we just had the discussion on Palmiero:
Does Fred "The Crime Dog" McGriff belong in the HOF?
Just remember, he is at 486 right now.

Commericals:  Ill get back to you on that one.  I saw
a good one the other day but cant remember it for the
(life) of me.

Editor's Note:  I saw that clip as well and I'm pretty
sure that Bush didn't use the word "frickin."

Steve "the overprotective brother" Sprague  ***POTW***

I have to say that Pete Rose's lifetime ban should be
lifted.  I mean really, guys like Daryll Strawberry,
Dwight Gooden, and Steve Howe aren't permanently
banned.  Which is really surprising given the fact
that each of those three probably tried to snort one
of the base lines at least twice in his career.  Sure,
Pete gambled, but if baseball thinks that gambling
is such a disgrace to their sport they should
disassociate themselves from all fantasy leagues.
Gambling is the number one reason why sports have
fans.  Especially now a days.  The only reason some
one watches a (crappy) team like the Tigers is that
they are hoping the teams combine to beat the
over-under, or they have Raul Mondesi on their fantasy
team.

Also, don't give me (junk) like, "Pete bet on baseball
that means that every time he didn't bet on the Reds
he was betting against them."  The only thing that
would possibly sway me is if he actually placed a bet
against his team, in a game he was managing.  This guy
did not shave points, either as a player or a manager,
he never threw a game (sorry Shoe-Less Joe, your case
is in-defensible) he played hard every time he stepped
out there, and he earned his spot in the hall.  What
happened after his career should be of no
consequence.

P.S.  Early line for Darko Milicic, or however you
spell his name, for Rookie of the Year: 3 to 1.
Pistons world champs in 2005.

Regarding Pete Rose, I really don't know.  But if I
have to decide I say let him into the Hall, sure it
cheapens his penalty but who really cares anymore?
Rose in the Hall will be good for baseball, it's not
like Rose is hurting b/c he's out of the hall.  He's
probably doing better financially b/c of the whole
ordeal.  Although I wish he'd open up a gambling
website already!

Dallas "Big D" Senters

though the tigers didn't win the series versus the
yankees, they did win one, and ruin clemens' day...go
job kitties.

the indians looked good this week, as many teams do
against the white sox

the reds still hit home runs, and griffey pulled his
weight in a big way...may i say "whoo"

which brings me to the poll question... pete rose, a
red, and an unquestionably GREAT player should
definitely be a hall of famer.  period

i hope the yankees can't get clemens his milestone
all season, in fact i hope noone on that team does
anything, and they can take the mariners and giants
with them.

go cincy
go tribe

go HIGHLANDS!!! (undoubtably the best softball team in
hillsdale history)

i'm done

Toolie's Trashtalk...

I about fell over this weekend, when I actually caught
a Sunday night episode of the Simpsons.  I don't watch
the show that much anymore, so I'm not sure if this
was a rerun.  One of the scenes had the boys of the
show playing some sandlot ball, with Milhouse pitching
to Bart.  Bart started the dialogue by bragging that
he was Tomokazu Ohka of the Montreal Expos and
Milhouse came back by imagining himself as Esteban Yan
of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays (at this point I figured
it was a rerun since Yan went to the Rangers before
heading to St. Louis, where he is now).  Then Nelson
comes in and says he's the guy that nobody at the
ballpark likes, Billy Crystal.  I didn't really get
that, but the whole thing was pretty comical.

On the issue of Sammy Sosa...nice try Sammy, I'm not
buying it.  I know I'll probably draw some ire from
the likes of Krugh and James Brandon, but if you have
a corked bat that you use for BP, you either make it
obviously different from your game sticks, or you
shelf/bag it as soon as BP is over.  I don't know why
Sosa would use a corked bat, I've liked the guy all
right over the years.  Now, as coach Lutz used to tell
me, "if you ain't cheatin' you ain't trying."  This is
true, but corking a bat isn't a very clever way of
cheating.  It doesn't take any skill (like stealing
signs or finding ways to doctor a ball without any of
the umps seeing it) and it has a direct effect on your
personal stats.  How long has Sosa been using that
bat?  Who knows?  All we've got is his word.  Maybe
you can make a case for giving him the benefit of the
doubt, but he's either a cheat or a fool.  Which would
you rather be?  Sammy is choosing to play the fool
card.  If he grabbed the wrong bat, that's as absent
minded as Trot Nixon / Larry Walker / Benny Agbayani
tossing a live ball into the stands.  Not a good day
for a north side supporter.

So I had planned on seeing the game on Sunday with my
girlfriend and her father, but we were unceremoniously
given the no-go by the Tigers' ticket office Saturday
afternoon as the game was sold out.  Sold out?
Amazing.  So that was a bummer, but I had been
thinking that the only way the game could be a
disappointment (if I had been in attendance) is if the
Tigers lost and Rocket didn't get the win.  As it
turned out, I would have sat there for almost two
games to see the Tigers come up just short, with all
the Clemens drama ending 10 innings ago.  So perhaps
not getting to see that game was a blessing in
disguise.  Props to Matt Weiland for checking in with
an invite to the game on Friday, which I had to
decline (again, I missed a 6-0 whipping, so perhaps I
lucked out there as well).  Also, thanks to Gilby for
his recap of the win on Saturday.  If anyone attends
the game and feels like writing a recap of it, send it
in and make sure it's not any longer than the one Nic
sent.

I was listening to the Rome show today and it turns
out that his next tour stop will be at the Palace of
Auburn Hills on Saturday, July 26.  The following hour
of the show (after the announcement) consisted of two
things; Half the people took out their aggression by
blasting the city of Detroit.  The other half were
Michiganders telling people from Chicago, Toronto, and
the whole state of Ohio that they weren't invited to
the show.  Classic.  Also, Stoney and Wojo got some
major accolades from callers on teh show (for all you
east siders who know those guys).  I am planning on
going, as it will no doubt be a classic event.  If you
are a fan of Rome at all, you should try and get
there.

It is June, right?  I came home from teaching tonight
and my apartment was freezing.  That global warming is
killing us!

Interleague play started today (yuck) and strangely,
all of the NL teams were home.  That's right, all of
the AL teams were on the road, so the DH was toast!
For the record, Nate Cornejo was 0 for 2 with a pair
of K's.  Good thing he wasn't allowed up there four
times or he might have gone Golden Sombrero on us.
Jesse Orosco came in and pitched the remainder of the
9th (after Dmitri cracked his 3 run shot) inning for
the Padres.  Man that guy is old.  I can still see my
1987 Topps Jesse Orosco card that is probably packed
away in some box in my folks' basement (I probably
have at least 10 of those cards).  You know 1987
Topps, the ones that have the wooden background.  I
almost got a pack of baseball cards at 7-11 a couple
of weeks ago, because I saw a pack was ONLY $1.50.
Then I picked up the pack and it was so thin that for
a second I thought maybe all that was inside was the
gum.  It turns out that there were only five cards in
the pack.  Yeah, like I'm gonna pay 30 cents for a Jay
Gibbons card.  What a rip off.

There was a Fact or Fiction on Sportscenter last week
where they asked whether Cincinnati slugger Adam Dunn
would finish with more HR's than the Tigers will have
wins, and both guys said fact!!!  Ugh, that's sad.
Here's how it looks as of today.

Dunn:    18 HR's
Tigers:  15 Wins

Adios amigos.  The Tigers now have the same undy five
hundy as the Padres, but the Pads have the better
winning percentage.  They're almost out of the cellar!
 Keep the faith!
