I just HAD to put things off
until Tuesday, didn't I?
So now instead of the first winning week it's a draw.
Oh well, at least the Tigers accomplished their first
winning road trip of the season, and their first
series win. Now they have that lofty four game
winning streak to set their sights on. However, the
prescription for a winning streak does not involve
Oakland and Seattle, even if they're coming to CoPa.

Here's the customary shout out to the new kids on the

"Week" of 5/6 - 5/13
Record: 3-3 WW-LLW-L
The undy five hundy stops on a dime (actually, two
dimes) this week and that's hopefully a sign of a
turnaround. For now the boys are stuck on 20 games
undy. We still have yet to play Cleveland, and that
will really determine which team is the worst of them
all.

News and notes: Matt Anderson: fireballer, closer,
crazy hairstyle...SENT TO AAA! That's right, Matty
has been sent back to the minors to work out the kinks
and try and get some velocity back. Apparently, he's
only topping out at 93-94 MPH (practically an offspeed
pitch, right?). In his place in Steve Avery, back in
the bigs for the first time since 1999. Yes, that's
the same Steve Avery that was a stud for the Braves in
the early 90s. He pitched a scoreless inning against
Tampa Bay on Sunday. I wonder how he swings the bat.
------------------------------------------------------
Tigers of the Week...
------------------------------------------------------
I say that Bobby Higginson deserves some accolades for
his impressive streak of five straight games with more
than one hit. Granted, that streak stretches into
some of last week, but Higginson has also hit .375 in
this last week. He's stolen a couple of bases and is
hitting a little more like he is being paid. It's
tough to believe that Higgy had 30 HR's in 2000.
But Higgy can't top what Dmitri did in Baltimore on
the 6th! Young went 5 for 5 with two home runs and
two triples. He gets major props for not stopping at
second base in the 9th, waiving his chance at the
cycle. The game was still on the line, and Dmitri
(.476 over the last seven days) played the game like
it should be played. It's gotta be the fro!
------------------------------------------------------
Quote of the Week...
------------------------------------------------------
"If there's a game, I don't care who I'm playing, I
might as well win...If I'm playing you or my son, I
don't care. I'm here to win." - Dusty Baker, on
being asked about how he will be coaching the NL
All-Stars now that the winner gets its league's
representative home field advantage in the World
Series.
I love quotes like those. If you're playing a game,
you should always be trying to win. Now, intensity
levels can change, but the goal is always to win the
game. This is assuming, of course, that the game is
not being played as some kind of tutorial. Any other
questions should be directed toward NY Jets coach,
Herman Edwards.
------------------------------------------------------
Beat Down of the Week...
------------------------------------------------------
Everyone in the Yankees starting lineup got a hit
Thursday, in New York's 16-5 trouncing of the Mariners
(I wonder if Keith, Sara Jo, or Melinda were in
attendance). Freddy "The Rock" Garcia was rocked for
nine earned in under three innings. Seven Yankees had
multi-hit games. The Yanks won the series 2-1,
scoring at least 7 runs in each game. Yikes!
------------------------------------------------------
Poll Question...
------------------------------------------------------
This year, the league that wins the All-Star game will
win its teams representative home field advantage for
the World Series. What are your feelings on this? Do
you think it's fair? Do you think this will encourage
more competative play at the game?
Also, Rafael Palmeiro hit his 500th home run this week
against Cleveland. There is debate as to whether
Palmeiro is Hall of Fame material. Let's see what the
populus thinks on this matter.
------------------------------------------------------
Trivia Answer...
------------------------------------------------------
Shouts go out to "J.D." Drew Markham for answering the
trivia question correctly. Apparently he isn't very
proud of himself, as here is what he had to say.

Baltimora was the outstandingly talented band that
brought to the world the anthem of crap "Tarzan Boy."
I hate myself for knowing that.

God bless the Pistons. At least one Detroit team is
doing their job. T-Mac eat a dick.

Dave "3-D" Dixon
Dude, where's Pistons Weekly? There's only one
Detroit team that isn't choking right now. Of course,
by the time this hits the press, AI and
the Sixers may have already put them to bed. But
geez, how can you beat Tayshaun the Prince of the
Palace?
Maybe Joe Dumars should take over the Tigers. At
least then we wouldn't have the perpetual player
retention headaches.
------------------------------------------------------
"Poor Ole" Terry O'Toole
WOW! Three in a row, I may have to start watching
again, tough for the starting pitcher (Maroth) they
just can't hold a lead for that kid, but a least his
pitching has improved.

Anthony "Twan" Williams
Shout-out to Matt for being a loyal fan when life is
really, really bad.
On Hillsdale College softball: with defense like the
Highlanders had, with Matt "Supersonic" O'Toole
running the bases, Jim "10-Foot Stretch"
Higginbottom on first, and the rest of that stellar
team (except for the catcher, who inexplicably failed
to ever show up), I think we'd beat any HC softball
team, past or present. Even if the Sig Chi team was
hung-over. And the Highlander pitchers weren't bad,
either.
On Todd Jones: I like people who say what they think,
whether I agree with them or not. And I happen to
agree with Jones; if somebody wants to be gay, ok.
But there's no need to tell everyone or make a big
deal out of it. That seems to me to be what he's
saying.
On baseball in general: as I no longer have any
interest in hockey, I have been checking out the MLB
standings, and even a sometime basefall fan like me
notices some odd things:
Anaheim is 2 games below .500 and, in the AL West,
only ahead of the still-dismal Rangers
The Mets are 5 games under .500
The Cubs are on top of the NL Central (congrats,
Krugh!)
San Diego is only better than Detroit and Cleveland.
Montreal is 2nd in the NL East.
Didn't Anaheim win last year? Yes, they did, because
I heard about them all the time those stinkin' Ducks
were beating the Stars. Angels "Karma," forsooth!
The Ducks have a brick wall in the net, that's all.
Kinda like me in foosball. Well, sometimes.
Occassionally. Once in awhile. Back when I was good.
I shall end by wishing luck to the Tigers, Rangers,
and Cubs. And the Indians, for Dallas and Ciofani. I
need some friends who root for teams that are good...
------------------------------------------------------
Nick "Reality Check" Ciofani
If the Tigers catch the Tribe in the standings, I'm
going to shoot myself.
------------------------------------------------------
Matt "Grignard" Weiland
First off Toolie my sincere sympathies for being
hosed. Call up good ole Weiland and Turner and we
will be there. I must admit that any theory I have
about scheduling will not be backed, just my personal
opinion. I never thought of scheduling as a big deal
we would just go out and play. Commish I agree with
you, the schedule will mess up the wild card race.
Any team that is in a race against another team (or a
few) would love to play them down the stretch. This
is not always the case, the teams are stuck playing
each other in bunches. The Tigs play two opponents 14
times out of 17 games the last strech of the season.
I guess I think it is more exciting to see a team make
their way in by winning and not watching to see
someone lose. Don't ask me what needs to change I
wouldn't know where to begin. Somebody spilled
something in the lab so I'm out.
Hey how about Damion "0-for-10" Easley this weekend.
Hey Turner if you get the new job make sure the ages
of the Tigers stay the same.
Chas keep writing those riviting inserts. Dallas
where you been?
Weiland

Toolie's Trashtalk...
So the Tigers had a little winning streak, and then
looked like the same old bunch of pussycats in their
first two games in Tampa. They roared back on Sunday,
but were shut down at home by Ted Lilly and the A's.
It's almost like who's going to show up? I tell you
what though, this pitching staff is performing
beautifully. They are 8th in the AL in ERA (not bad)
and 3rd in BB allowed, but they are dead last in K's.
What's up with sports reporters and anchors being so
PC these days? It seems like there aren't any sports
announcers or sports talk radio guys that are willing
to take the non PC stand on an issue. And what's up
with this crappy Bob Ley every night? I hate Bob Ley,
he looks like the guy the Pillsbury Doughboy grew up
to be. He's not that fat, he just has a striking
resemblance. And his Outside the Lines show is the
most boring show ever. Just give me another edition
of Baseball Tonight please and I'll be satisfied.
Outside the Lines every night...geez, what a great
idea. Who the heck is running ESPN? Who wants to
watch stupid Bob Ley at 10:30PM when all we really
want is to be spoon fed highlights and statistics?
Speaking of TV woes, FSD has gone on the fritz at my
apartment and we don't get UPN, so I am SOL until the
cable company gets of their A-S-S. Looks like I'll
just have to go see more games in person.
Hmm, to start banter on my own poll question, I'm not
sure about Raffy. If you look at his career stats
versus someone like McGwire (a dominant 1B of this
era) then Raffy looks pretty good. He should finish
with about as many HR's as McGwire if he plays three
more seasons, and his career average is 30 points
higher. He also has about 1000 more hits than Big
Mac, and I think McGwire is a lock for the Hall (but
who knows?). He certainly doesn't have the name
recognition as some other stars, though.
I saw some news scrolling along the bottom of the
screen while watching the Pistons on ESPN about some
WNBA player having season ending surgery, which begs
the question: If a WNBA player has surgery and nobody
cares, is there really an injury to begin with?
WNBA...they got next.
The new Miller Lite commercials are a great follow up
to the original catfight one. GREAT TASTE!
Oh yeah, I'm supposed to mention Gilbert... Gilbert is
really good at darts, but he stinks at golf (as do I),
especially on number 4 of the Whites at Hickory Knoll.
Ugh, I'm getting some trashtalk block here. My brain
is fried, it's time to go home.
Great post this week by Anthony, who I will always
remember for that A-Bomb remark that I can't quite
remember now. But I remember he made it.

I'm out...
